In the pages of The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony<\/em>, Roberto Calasso does not limit himself to a mere mythographic recounting. Guided by the intuition and hermeneutic lessons of Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend (Hamlet’s Mill<\/em>) \u2014 an authoritative work published in Italy by Adelphi Edizioni<\/a> \u2014 Calasso reconstructs the grammar of a true mythical astronomy<\/strong>. On pages 36 and 37 of his essay, the image of the swing<\/strong> and the mournful gesture of the severed lock of hair<\/strong> merge into a single investigation of celestial mechanics: a rigorous language in which the motion of the stars is translated into bodily, ritual, and erotic imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Physics of the Swing and Solsticial Stasis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a swing reaches the apex of its trajectory \u2014 whether the highest point of its push or the bottom endpoint of its reversal \u2014 a paradoxical moment occurs: its vector velocity drops to zero. For an imperceptible fraction of a second, the suspended object “stands still,” floating in immobility before reversing course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dynamic stasis is the poetic translation of the solstice<\/strong> (sol-stitium<\/em>, “the Sun standing still”). The sovereign sun, in its apparent declination along the ecliptic, halts its ascent at the summer solstice or its descent at the winter solstice, only to reverse its path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
